4. Ice Age (2002)Watch Video

A team of "sub-zero heroes" band together to save a human infant in this ice agedigitally animated feature from Oscar-winning director Chris Wedge, whose unique lighting software (called "Ray Tracing") sets his visual style apart from earlier CGI efforts. Twenty thousand years ago, the Earth is overrun by freezing temperatures in an Ice Age that is sending all manner of critters scattering in the path of encroaching glaciers. When a lost human infant is discovered, an unlikely quartet of misfits forms to return it to its mother: Manny, a depressed woolly mammoth Ray Romano; Sid, a fast-talking sloth John Leguizamo; an acorn-crazed squirrel named Scrat (Wedge); and the devilish saber-toothed tiger named Diego Denis Leary. Before they can complete their mission, the reluctant compatriots will brave pits of boiling lava, dangerous caverns of ice, and even a traitorous plot within their midst.

5. Ice Age 2 (The Meltdown)Watch Video

Those CGI prehistoric critters from Ice Age are back in this inevitable sequel where Global warming is causing a meltdown of the ice caps. It has nothing to do with greenhouse gases, though; this is happening thousands of years ago, and it’s putting the animals who live on the ice in peril. Mannyice age 2, a mammoth, Diego, a sabre-tooth tiger and Sid, a sloth, are among those attempting to escape from the floods. Manny, who thinks he’s the last surviving mammoth, is surprised to meet Ellie, a female mammoth who was raised by possums and thinks she IS a possum. The animals are threatened by the nasty creatures who inhabit the rising waters….Meanwhile, Scrat, a squirrel, continues his frustrated efforts to hang onto an acorn. Inevitably, the freshness of the original ICE AGE, which was released four years ago, is diminished in this sequel. Carlos Saldanha has replaced Chris Wedge as director, but the formula is much the same, though this time there aren’t any human characters in view. The funniest character is still the squirrel, the only character without a voice, whose antics are very much in the tradition of classic animated films. Actors Ray Romano, Denis Leary and John Leguizamo provide the voices for the three friends, and Ellie is given the distinctive tones of Queen Latifah. The film is distinguished by some fine animation but a routine storyline. Apart from the occasional delightful scene, like the one in which a flight of ominous vultures sing “Food Glorious Food”, ICE AGE 2 is rather ordinary.

2. Wind Talkers (Nicolas Cage) Watch Video

Loosely based on a real-life operation during World War II, this action-adventure directed by John Woo played by Nicolas Cage as Joe Enders, a Marine traumatized by the lwind talkersoss of his entire platoon in the Solomon Islands during an ambush he believes was deadlier than necessary due to his indecision. Suffering from eardrum damage in Hawaii, Joe manages to be declared fit for duty once again thanks to a sympathetic nurse, but his new assignment isn't what he expects. Joe is ordered to safeguard a Navajo soldier named Ben Yahzeebecause the military has developed a new secret code based on the near-dead Navajo language that is proving unbreakable to the Japanese. Any soldier that speaks Navajo is an immediate asset, including Ben and his pal, Charlie Whitehorse. Joe's orders are to "baby sit" Ben during the invasion of Saipan, protecting him if possible, but -- if the code-talker's capture becomes imminent -- to kill him before he falls into enemy hands. Meanwhile, Charlie is to be guarded by affable harmonica player Ox Henderson. Despite their growing mutual respect, Joe is eventually forced to take an action that threatens to shatter his bond with Ben, as the war's tragic losses strike closer to home for both men.

3. Band of BrothersWatch Video

band of brothersThis movie is a ten-part miniseries based on the book Band of Brothers: E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne From Normandy to Hitler's Eagle's Nest by Stephen E. Ambrose. The series dramatically re-creates the path of Easy Company, an elite paratrooper unit, from their basic training at Camp Toccoa in Georgia in 1942, to D-Day, to their critical involvement in the Battle of the Bulge, through their triumph at the close of the war. The unit was one of the best trained and most productive in American military history, but it also suffered immense casualties. The series is an ensemble piece, involving dozens of characters, and cast with relative unknowns. To the extent that there is a central character, it is Dick Winters, who went to Toccoa as a lieutenant and was promoted, over the course of the war, to battalion commander. Each episode includes brief excerpts from present-day interviews with some of the surviving members of the company. While the series is not a hagiography, Winters is depicted as a brave, resourceful, and humane leader. It's clear that the men revered him, and that he genuinely respected and cared about them. There are a few other members of the unit that make a strong impression. Sobel, their C.O. at Toccoa, is depicted as a petty tyrant whose men bond together in their hatred of him. Nixon is Winters' fellow officer and best friend, and an alcoholic. Carwood Lipton, is a decent, hard-working man, and a tremendous soldier who earns a battlefield commission for his exemplary leadership. Bill Guarnere fears nothing, and is known for his wise-guy attitude and hot temper. The series dramatizes the courage and fortitude of many others, but it's clear that Winters sets the tone for his men, and plays a pivotal role in the unit's success.

4. A Bridge Too Far Watch Video

It's late 1944, and the Allied armies are confident they'll win the World War II and be home in time for a bridge too farChristmas. Paratroops led by British major general Robert Urquhart played by Sean Connery and American brigadier general James Gavin will seize a thin road and five bridges through Holland into Germany, with paratroops led by Lieutenant Col. John Frost holding the most critical bridge at a small town called Arnhem. Over this road shall pass combined forces led by British Lieutenant Gen. Brian Horrocks and British Lieutenant Col. Joe Vandeleur. The plan requires precise timing, so much so that one planner tells Lieutenant Gen. Frederick Browning, "Sir, I think we may be going a bridge too far." The plan also has one critical flaw: Instead of a smattering of German soldiers, the area around Arnhem is loaded with crack SS troops. Disaster ensues.

By staffing his planschindler's listt with Jews who've been herded into Krakow's ghetto by Nazi troops, Schindler has a dependable unpaid labor force. For Stern, a job in a war-related plant could mean survival for himself and the other Jews working for Schindler. However, in 1942, all of Krakow's Jews are assigned to the Plaszow Forced Labor Camp, overseen by Commandant Amon Goeth, an embittered alcoholic who occasionally shoots prisoners from his balcony. Schindler arranges to continue using Polish Jews in his plant, but, as he sees what is happening to his employees, he begins to develop a conscience. He realizes that his factory (now refitted to manufacture ammunition) is the only thing preventing his staff from being shipped to the death camps. Soon Schindler demands more workers and starts bribing Nazi leaders to keep Jews on his employee lists and out of the camps. By the time Germany falls to the allies, Schindler has lost his entire fortune -- and saved 1,100 people from likely death. 6. Full Metal Jacket (1987) Watch Video

This movie was adapted from Gustav Hasford's novel THE SHORT TIMERS, is broken down into two very different parts. The first half of the film focusesfull metal jacket on the training of a squad of Marine grunts on Parris Island, and more specifically on the troubled relationship between the brutal drill sergeant and an oafish misfit who just happens to be a sharpshooter. The second half takes the grunts to Hue City, where the climactic battle of the 1968 Tet Offensive--and the turning point of the Vietnam War--took place. The story is told through the eyes of Private Joker, a cynical aspiring photojournalist who is forced to fight for his life and the lives of his fellow recruits. Unusually for Kubrick, FULL METAL JACKET emerged at a time when a trend for films about Vietnam was in full swing. London's abandoned docklands may not be the most obvious choice of location to replicate the ravages of the Vietnam landscape, but this is where Kubrick shot the film, sticking to his dogged principles of not shooting outside his adopted home. A moving commentary on the dehumanizing process that occurs when soldiers prepare and engage in battle, FULL METAL JACKET is an unforgettable experience from one of the most original voices to ever pick up a movie camera.

7. Platoon (Charlie Sheen)
Watch Video
This movie was a brutal realistic look at a young soldier's tour of duty in Vietnam. Chris Taylor is a college student who quits school to volunteer for the Army in the late '60s. He's shipped off to Vietnam, where he serves with a culturally diverse group of fellow soldiers under two men who lead the platoon: Sgt. Barnes (Tom Berenger), whose facial scars are a mirror of the violence and corruption of his soul, and Sgt. Elias played by Willem Dafoe, who maintains a Zen-like calm in the jungle and fights with both personal and moral courage even though he no longer believes in the war. After a few weeks "in country," Taylor begins to see t
platoonhe naïveté of his views of the war, especially after a quick search for enemy troops devolves into a round of murder and rape. Platoon is a grunts-eye view of the war, touching on moral issues but focusing on the men who fought the battles and suffered the wounds. In this sense, it resembles older war movies more than its Vietnam peers, as it mixes familiar elements of onscreen battle with small realistic details: bugs, jungle rot, exhaustion, C-rations, marijuana, and counting the days before you go home. This mix of traditional war movie elements with a contemporary sensibility won this movie four Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director, and a reputation as one of the definitive modern war films.

4. Catch Me If You Can Watch Video
Stephen Spielberg directed a film based on the true story of Frank Abagnale Jr. (catch me if you canLeonardo De Caprio). Abagnale was a successful kid con artist who was able to pass himself off as many different people in many different professions. He ended up with the FBI on his tail after taking a lot of money from Pan Am, and forging the checks so that they would cash more easily. Cashing more than $2.5 million in checks is what put Carl Hanratty (Tom Hanks) on a pursuit that would surely catch Frank. Abagnale was played by Leonardo DiCaprio in a really well acted role as a high school student in the 1960's. He was may more intelligent than what he put his mind to, but I guess it was the excitement of it all that wrapped him up. Hanratty is played by Hanks, as a dedicated FBI agent who is sure that he has the means and methods to catch Abagnale if he sticks to the case. Together they are great, and with the Direction of Spielberg turned this film into a real winner.

With bawdy humor and grudging praise providing counterpoint to his fierce stares and verbal intimidation, it's difficult to determine whether he's toughening a protégé through trial by fire, or laughing at a patsy he training daydespises. Training Day directed by Antoine Fugua is a violent, vigorous film sure to leave viewers uneasily processing their feelings about it. In that climate of renewed reverence for the police, the film's exaggerated portrayal of narcotics officers can't help but feel a bit uncharitable. Still, there's immediacy to the thesis that these undercover cops are so ornately jeweled, so hip to street culture, and so entrenched in their renegade philosophies that they become indistinguishable from the gangsters they're hunting. The film also understands how this world is governed by bravado, as Washington astutely and systematically manipulates Hawkes' eagerness to prove he's man enough for the job. Washington alternates between visceral intensity and mere showiness in a role that's courageously unlikable, while Hawke makes the most of a soft, underwritten character. Even while including a handful of stylized camera tricks, Fuqua maintains a tense realism by filming in some of L.A.'s worst neighborhoods, using his own street credibility to convince real drug dealers and low-lifes to appear in the film. No less challenging for its flawed sensationalism, Training Day is bracing cinema.
